Spirit of the Beehive

Spirit of the Beehive (sometimes stylized in all caps) is a psych-punk and dream pop trio from Philadelphia. While their 2014 debut album was relatively conventional (to the extent that can be said of anything that falls into those genres), their subsequent work became increasingly idiosyncratic. While the songs continue to utilize guitar, bass and drums (sometimes now electronic), they are combined with synthesized and sampled sounds composed into unusual structures often alternating between dream pop-like sections with subdued vocals and blasts of industrial-like noises or found sounds/media samples, sometimes also including more traditional punk- or post-punk-like passages. This whiplash effect can be disconcerting, but it, along with the impressionistic lyrics, effectively convey a sense of unreality, dream and nightmare, and the difficulty of discerning its difference from reality. 2021's ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH, provides a particularly good example.
