Sour Widows

Sour Widows is a band that plots a path across the indie landscape that takes a rough '90s alt-rock sound with DIY esthetic as its base, and uses it as a mold for songs that might otherwise feel fairly folk-centric. There is a sense of sparseness in their arrangements, and especially some quirky instrumental that may recall Slint's hypnotic style, especially on their debut album, 2024's Revival of a Friend. They are built around singer-songwriter leads Maia Sinaiko and Susanna Thomson, who harmonize remarkably with one another, while the measured, even subtle work of drummer Max Edelman completes the trio. There is a strong melancholic quality that permeates their music across the board, which resolves into a quiet beauty that rewards multiple listents.
