Once a moniker used by composer pianist vocalist Ryan Lott, Son Lux became a trio on 2015's Bones when he brought on board two top notch musicians from his touring band: guitarist Rafiq Bhatia and drummer Ian Chang. The two had an immediate impact on the Son Lux catalog with their compositional skills and production ideas as well. As a solo act, Lot's music was built on meticulously constructed pieces that were informed a great deal by his background in classical music. It had some Beirut and Bright Eyes vibes. As a trio, they adopted a bold, unsettling, and rhythmically complex style (suggesting a touch of J.Dilla) that also embraces dissonance and tension. Their exploration of form led to a more experimental sound that gradually morphed into a combination of ambient, electronic and post-rock, especially highlighted in their Tomorrows trilogy (2020, 2021).
