SHOLTO

SHOLTO (allcaps) is drummer and multi-instrumentalist producer Oscar Robertson, an artist whose rich sonic palette combines a variety of styles that bring out a loose, fluid sound. Jazz is a foundational component for sure, buried as it sometimes seems to be under a wobbly and psychedelic-adjacent version of mid-century orchestral pop that gives his music a distinct veneer. Bits of vintage French pop also come across, as well as hints of krautrock. His music fits nicely in the contemporary landscape in the way it mixes lo-fi type textures with a funky, jazzy base (see Bokoya or Kiefer for instance). His lush orchestration and the cinematic feel that it projects gives his music its somewhat idiosyncratic quality.
