Bokoya

Bokoya is a Cologne based band that builds their music around live beatmaking with a drum set at its core. They play a style that combines elements of hip-hop and jazz, with a strong sense of groove and an improvisational quality to their process. Free style jamming is typically the starting point for their pieces where they end up locked into a particular beat and repeating motifs as they form their tunes. Drummer Leon Raum often leans towards breakbeats, though the ensemble also dives into a funky sound with some regularity and explore electronic textures. They have been operating as a trio, following the departure of trumpeter Ferdinand Schwarz, and engaging in various collaborations in recent years.
