Obongjayar

Obingjayar is the stage name of singer/songwriter Steven Umoh, whose music draws heavily from the traditions of Nigeria, where he grew up before moving to the UK. His work does not fit tightly in any particular mold stylistically due to the specific way in which he combines parts of pop, soul, electronica, hip-hop, and West African rhythms to form a distinctive sound. There is a quite a bit of variety in his music as he continues to explore different rhythmic structures, textures and tones on his path towards developing his own voice. When he is not delivering a soft ballad, such as "I Wish It Was Me", he sings with a deep rasp, sometimes bordering on a kind of melodic moaning that taps into a bluesy feel. He also raps and uses spoken word segments in his songs.
