Amaarae is the moniker for singer/songwriter Ama Serwah Genfi, who was born in the Bronx and grew up moving back and forth between Ghana and the US. Her music is a melting pot of Afrofusion, alternative R&B, and indie pop, with some Latin beats as well, whether in the form of cumbia or reggaeton. She placed a lot of emphasis on acoustic instruments in her first couple of albums, including a nicely arpeggiated guitar playing a central role. Her 2023 album Fountain Baby preserves the bold percussion, but also leans clearly in the direction of bright electronic instrumentation. She has a sweet voice that projects youth, while she uses her cadence and delivery on the vocals lines up with the song's rhythms. The Afro-fusion beats are in relatively soft focus most of the time.
