Sudan Archives
Outline
An experimental artist originally from Cincinnati, Sudan Archives is the stage name of Brittney Parks whose music prominently features her violin. Parks took her name as a tribute to Sudanese folk music, especially fascinated with their use of the violin. After her initial set of EPs that were influenced by the music of East Africa, she began to reorient herself closer to R&B while retaining her experimental flair and the use of the violin, occasionally plucked, processed and looped, still referencing non-western music at times. On the other hand, she also came to incorporate a range of hip-hop elements into her music, expanding the eclectic pool that her songs draw from. She has moved her vocals more to the center, singing more openly and no longer covering her voice with the mist of electronic filters as she did early on, which has also helped kick her music to the next level.
