Nerve

Nerve is the electronic band that has virtuoso Swiss drummer Jojo Mayer at its dead center with the entire band built around him. Mayer was already an accomplished jazz drummer before he moved into the world of broken beats through drum 'n' bass and jungle in the '90s, which quickly became the core of his musical identity and career from then on. The other members of the band handle the bass, synths, and sound production. Each one is a terrific musician on their own as they provide a solid foundation and texture for Mayer to do his thing, i.e., start by establishing a beat and then begin to subvert it without disrupting the flow. The result is an amalgamation of drum 'n' bass, techno, and jazz that also sounds like none of its parts. Their work is exclusively instrumental and constructed through improvisational sessions. Note that their 2018 album After the Flare has the entire band take on acoustic instruments to create a straight-up jazz album.
