Moor Mother
Outline
Moor Mother (née Camae Ayewa) is an electronic artist, a poet, and an activist whose work as a musician has very strong avant-garde and free jazz components, where she mixes poetry reading with rapping and uses rhythmic and musical accompaniment that treads the line between hip-hop, jazz, and electronica. Her body of work is generally quite challenging and unsettling, but it is also highly visceral, profound, and passionate. She strongly gravitates towards dissonance, which was somewhat muted in her 2022 album, Black Encyclopedia of the Air. Her earlier recordings were far more abrasive in tone and made abundant use of noise that was rooted in electronics as well as an almost industrial style of music that contained more pronounced beats. Her delivery was much harsher as well. She is a frequent collaborator to other artists, including billy woods (of Armand Hammer).
She works with Irreversible Entanglements as their vocalist, in house poet.
She has collaborated with billy woods (Armand Hammer), Yatta, Olaf Melander, and Nicole Mitchell, among others.
She is part of the Black Quantum Futurism collective.
