Outline
Midlake is a folk rock band based in Denton, TX with a broad, cinematic sound and a type energy in their deliberate pacing and progression that should be familiar from bands like Band of Horses or Local Natives. Early on when when singer-songwriter Tim Smith was at the helm, their music was overtly inspired by the '70s English folk rock movement and the mellower, folk-inspired versions of prog rock from the same era. There were also some clear Radiohead influences especially in the beginning. Their overall sound did not change radically after Smith's departure, but they started sliding towards more of an indie rock/indie folk type sound with a gentle, relaxed tone that continued to stick to the softer edges. Their songs are highly melodic, quite easy on the ear, and impeccably recorded and performed.
