María José Llergo

María José Llergo is a Barcelona based singer-songwriter whose works merges flamenco, a style native to the region Andalusia where she grew up, and contemporary pop. She was closer to her traditional roots, though with a fresh and modern take on it, in her debut album, Sanación (2020). On her second album, ULTRABELLEZA (2023), she shifted direction towards a mixture of modern pop and electronic music that served as a larger framework to process flamenco's rhythm, cadence, and coloring in varying degrees of intensity. The result is a kind of pop that stands in contrast with what is perhaps more familiar to international audiences in that it takes its burning soul, emotional profile, and to some extent, instrumentation, from a source other than some form of R&B, folk, or rock, while also remaining quite familiar in its presentation.
