Júlia Colom is a Spanish singer-songwriter whose songs are anchored in the traditional folk music of her native Mallorca. There is a s a nice stylistic variety in her work where the presentation of the songs stays closer to their folk roots in a lot of the cases, with minimal instrumental set up accompanying her slightly smoky, jazz trained voice, while others take on a modern angle with percussive arrangements and pronounced pop hooks. She sings in Mallorquí, a language closer to Catalan. The history of the island and its Moorish past is also reflected in the Arabic tonality in some of her tunes, added on top of the other elements one may be familiar from Spanish and northern Mediterranean folk.
