Magalí Datzira
Outline
Magalí Datzira is a singer and a bassist (electric and double) whose jazz has a charming and playful quality that comes pretty close to being pop without fully committing to it. She is highly gifted as a bass player, having come through the ranks of Barcelona's Sant Andreu Jazz Band, and an excellent singer who regularly switches between Catalan, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and English. There is an easy-going, buoyant feel to her music that maintains a light touch on jazz, focusing more on melody and spirit as opposed to chops, though she has plenty of those too. Her songs feel loose and comfortable, not to mention catchy, usually walking a near-minimalist path in terms of arrangements, and letting the strength of her composition and delivery do the work.
Lucia Fumero, her mentor Joan Chamorro and the Sant Andreu Jazz Band ashe started out with, clearly, but also China Bowl and Cherise, and you're wondering how they would sound with a layer of Spanish tradition.
She started out as one of the singers in Joan Chamorro's Barcelona based jazz education project, Sant Andreu Jazz Band.
