KOKOROKO is a London-based jazz band led by trumpetist Sheila Maurice-Grey, along with her Nerija bandmate Cassie Kinoshi. Guitarist Oscar Jerome, an original member, has since moved on to a solo career. The band plays broadly in the Afrobeat genre with a strong Latin component. Compared to other Afrobeat jazz performers in the same circles, such as Ezra Collective or any of the Shabaka Hutching projects, KOKOROKO's music is not as aggressive, and serves nicely as an entry point for what is happening in London these days. The more traditional mid-tempo approach that we see in Nerija's style of jazz is also apparent here, with Maurice-Gray and her restrained and delicate wind section paired with Jerome's laid back and detailed guitar work (now more than ably followed up by Tobi Adenaike-Johnson). KOKOROKO displays some excellent musicianship, their compositions are beautifully constructed, and the interplay between the instruments is captivating.
