Ashley Henry is a jazz pianist who has become one of the prominent figures among the South London based jazz artists emerging in the last few years. He has a relatively mellow playing style that makes use of syncopation and the spaces it opens up between the notes as he moves between melodic phrasings with remarkable ease and deliberateness. Both of these are stylistic choices he shares with Ahmad Jamal (going back to the '50s), someone he has mentioned as his idol in interviews. He incorporates hip-hop and grime into his music as layers without changing the fundamentals of his classic jazz sound or switching to a different playing style. He is a remarkable pianist with a sharp and sophisticated sense of composition.
