Jean Dawson is a singer-songwriter who works in the indie rock genre broadly speaking, but with a good range of secondary influences that give his catalog a nice breadth. He works off of a base that combines post-grunge, pop rock, and emo with a strong pop mindset and the kind of guitar shimmer that rises above a distorted background noise that suggests a streak of dream pop as well. He also brings in industrial hip-hop and some rapping as his music shifts stylistic gears, sometimes midstream. He has the songwriting chops to shoulder this fluidity well. He usually works in the high tempo range, but on the few occasions that he takes it down a few notches (see Pity Party), the results tend to be lovely as a range of emotional shades also emerge in his vocal delivery.
