Jackie Cohen is an indie artist with a keen ear for catchy melodies and the sounds of the '60s on her mind. Her songs are often breezy and earnest. They have an easy flow even when she takes a cloudy turn, as she did on Pratfall (2022). Up until that album, her music showed strong affinity towards early 60s style vocal harmonies, cadence, and melodic phrasing. Some of it is still there in her current work, but not as central. Instead, her focus seems to have shifted to other things, including tension-building that she began to incorporate into her music, which does not really stop her from continuing to decorate her songs with lovely hooks. Her voice has hints of what a young Dolly Parton might have sounded like if she had grown up in the San Fernando Valley and gravitated towards an off-kilter pop.
