Gabriel's Dawn
Outline
Gabriel's Dawn is a band that loves the early years of the Laurel Canyon music as defined by bands like The Byrds and Buffalo Springfield in the late '60s. The core of their music comes from that era, but there are also references to the jangle pop sound that grew from that in the '80s, so it is very clear where their heart is. The songs are melodic to the hilt, the guitars are ... well ... pretty jangly, and the vocals have that layer of innocence about them, though that might be all the retro sound that envelops singer Gudg's vocals coming through, who can tell? Her lyrics are surprisingly bleaker than the blast of sunshine and joy that the overall tone of the songs project, which in a way, works as a commentary on looking back at the music of a different era with some hindsight.
Late '60s Laurel Canyon jangle pop, obviously, but also The Hannah Barberas, Chime School
