French Vanilla is a post-punk band from Los Angeles that also has a strong funk/dance component to their music. They have a distinct sound that is built on a couple of components working against one another: one one side, there is vocalist Sally Spitz and her high energy punk shouting that channels the ebullience of the B52s more than anything else, matching Daniel Trautfield's turbo-charged growling saxophone riffing and dissonant soloing. Working against that is Ali Day's relentlessly sharp and funky bass coupled with Greg Shilton's steadying beats that provide the rudder the band needs. Agents of chaos vs agents of order in a sense. This basic dynamic does not change when Trautfeld and Day switch up, and he picks up the bass while she takes up the guitar. Same sound, different feel.
