Fever Ray is the stage name used by singer and electronic artist Karin Dreijer, who was member of the duo The Knife in the '00s. They continued to produce electronic music as a solo artist, retaining some of the club overtones, though perhaps not as much. The cerebral envelope pushing that was so central to The Knife's music came to be replaced by a growing emphasis on songwriting and a clearer alignment with pop idioms. They also began to downplay the more dancey components to some extent, allowing the darker tones and the emotional weight come closer to the surface. Quite a few of their songs tend to focus on the place of queer life in a modern western society. Their affinity towards Caribbean beats carries over to their solo work as well.
