Grimes (aka Claire Boucher) was FKA twigs before there was an FKA twigs. She started out as a bedroom recording electronic pop artist that combined a pulsating big bass sound, club and hop-hop beats, multi-tracked vocals, and electronic experimentation in her work when she emerged as a major artist in 2012 with Visions (preceding Lorde's breakout Pure Heroine by a year). Her overall style has not changed much: She now has more studio savvy and better polish, as well as a more pronounced melodic pop muscle. Otherwise, her beats are still up front, she still sings with that young voice, and her music still pulls hand-picked bit of specific elements from a variety of genres (say, industry), isolates them from their context, and throws them into the Grimes alchemy, to eventually turn them into her building blocks. Not being the lone oddball out there any more, she now plays with the confidence of an artist who can see that the pop world has finally caught up to her.
