Father John Misty is the moniker used by indie folk singer and one-time Fleet Foxes drummer Joshua Tillman in his solo work. He performed under the name J. Tillman previously, playing folk music with plenty of melancholy, which he moved away from as FJM, adopting a more pop-oriented, softer forms of indie rock approach. In fact, there are quite a few occasions where he sounds like he is channelling a young Elton John of the early '70s. It is clearly a part of the vintage feel evoked by his music, along with its melodic flow and overall presentation which suggests an artist who devoured '70s pop masters like Harry Nilsson and Randy Newman for breakfast every morning. He is a confident songwriter who puts together tuneful ballads with a flair for showstopping highs, paired with a health dose of self-deprecating humor.
