Ela Minus is a Brooklyn based electronic artist (birth name, Gabriela Jimeno), who started out as a drummer in a hardcore band in her native Bogotá, went on to attend Berklee school of music, and then gravitated towards a kind of music that treads the line between ambient sounds and techno/dance grooves mixed with trip-hop textures. Her style is more down tempo and contemplative than energetic and urgent. She has a quiet, whispery, soft voice that barely rises above her instruments, gently delivering lyrics that are not too far removed from being protest songs. Her music maintains a small scale, intimate touch whether she is working with four-on-the-floor dance beats or pulling back a little for cooler and more abstract synth noodling. She builds her own synthesizer hardware and has been avoiding the use of computers in her production.
