Dr Monika Demmler

Dr Monika Demmler is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose work takes darker shades of '60s garage rock sound as its foundation, then adds layer on it. There are some psychedelic references. Gothic blues makes an occasional appearance under some guise or another. Post-punk drones are there, close to the surface. The music she puts together as she pulls from these streams has a consistent sound with nice breadth. Her songs are not formulaic, nor are they locked into a single tone: they go upbeat, fuzzy, elegiac, but remain anchored to a rolling groove and that dark garage sound underneath. She has a raspy, expressive voice. She sang mostly in German before 2022.
