Deeper is a Chicago based band that plays a stark version of post-punk with a sharp and jagged sound and late '70s, very early '80s vibes. Most of all, it is that magic post-punk word: angular, especially in the way the guitars going into Television and Wire type action, bringing a similar jangle. The instrumentation is bright and relatively bare though not necessarily stripped down. They like to keep the tempo up and the arrangements tight. Vocalist Nic Gohl seems partial to a bit of a Gang of Four style speak singing with occasional traces of a very young and wailing Robert Smith mixed in. Their affection for the classics aside, the band plays a pretty clamped down and inspired music with clean lines and accessible melodies.
