Cat Toren is Brooklyn based pianist and composer who has been creating works of jazz that are while somewhat partial to post-bop, more often than not, follows an avant-garde type approach. She often takes aspects of the spiritual jazz advanced by classic artists like Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane and brings that into the kind of jazz that carries chamber music influences along the lines of Ralph Towner, his band Oregon or the work Keith Jarrett did with Jan Garbarek. Her latest solo work Sea / Sky (2022) takes her music deeper into the classical music territory and brings her up to the line between neoclassical and ambient. Regardless of the particular stylistic choices she makes in any given album, her music continues to be contemplative, deliberate, intricate, and engrossing.
