Trombonist Rosie Turton is one of the main figures in London's jazz circles, having come out of Tomorrow's Warriors youth jazz program around the same time as artists like Nubya Garcia and Sheila Maurice-Grey, two of her Nerija bandmates. Her musical path has diverged somewhat from her peers in that she took an interest in Indian Classical music, and gradually moved towards the type of meditative sound with spiritual and inquisitive undertones that guided the careers of artists like Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders in a previous generation. Her music tends to unfold patiently over steady grooves as she gives the instruments an expansive space to roam in. She has a very deliberate and melodic style on the trombone and her quintet is fairly well-balanced wrt the other soloists Johanna Burnheart on the violin and Maria Chiara Argirò on the piano.
