Nubya Garcia is a London-based tenor saxophonist and composer who has been an active member of the city's jazz circles, playing with pretty much everyone on every other record, exaggerating only slightly. She is a member of the Afrofusion inspired bands Nerija and Maisha, in addition to having participated in Makaya McCraven's transatlantic recordings. She is an intense and melodically-driven player who tends to push the tempo, ready to jump into the next phrase more often than she pulls back. Her playing style brings to mind a good chunk of John Coltrane's work in the '60s, as well as having some Dexter Gordon moments especially when she eases up on the tension. Her music has its roots in the Afro-Caribbean and Latin traditions, along with some dubstep, and a whole lot of post-bop jazz.
