Big Special

Big Special is a bundle of post-punk anxiety and punk anger mixed with slam poetry attitude running on acerbic humor. They are the vocalist/drummer duo Joe Hicklin and Callum Moloney from the industrial city of Birmingham, which colors the type of social, economic, and political frustrations that go into their work. They cover the ground between the feisty, spitfire spoken word of Sleaford Mods and the witty, speak-singing (occasionally plain singing) melodic flow of Yard Act.  Hicklin pulls off these different modes of delivery with ease, not even skipping a beat when their songs slide into more conventional forms. There is a nice variety to their songs, and a sense of firm grounding as well as purpose.
