BADBADNOTGOOD

BADBADNOTGOOD is a band from Toronto. While they are often referred to as a jazz ensemble and they are trained as jazz musicians, the majority of their published music feels more in the vein of Soul/R&B artists, 70s film soundtracks or sample-happy hip-hop producers like J Dilla and Madlib. Formed in 2010, they gained notoriety after releasing well-received covers of songs by the Odd Future and Wu Tang collectives, leading to collaborations with a rotating cast of Hip Hop and R&B artists including Tyler, the Creator, Ghostface Killah, , MF Doom, Daniel Caesar and KAYTRANADA. Being an instrumental group, even their non-collab releases often feature guest vocalists, both famous and obscure, that always seem to be well-chosen to bring the right energy. The band was originally formed by bassist Chester Hansen, keyboardist Matthew Tavares and drummer Alex Sowinski. In 2016, multi-instrumentalist Leland Whitty joined. In 2019, Tavares left the band but continues to collaborate with them.
