El Michels Affair is a project of New York songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Leon Michels. A veteran of the New York funk/soul scene of the early to mid-aughts, including a stint with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Michels draws on that experience as well as inspiration from the more cinematic elements of hip-hop to produce wildly varying music that manages to stay true to those roots. The results, which range from re-imaginings of Wu Tang classics to reggae/dub with Liam Bailey to Turkish and Indian inspired pop, complete with Hindi lyrics sung by Piya Malik, are always beautifully produced and never boring.
