Backhand is a Sydney based hardcore punk band with all its crucial ingredients in place: an energetic overdrive, truckloads of anger, vocal cord rupturing vocals, stripped down but effective instrumentation, and songs that clock at about a minute on average. They introduce the riff, jump right in, sing their guts out, leave everything on the floor in a burst of passion, then get out. The punk they have tapped into is not the sardonic, tongue-in-cheek, "having a good time" kind, but something visceral and political that plays like a sonic punch to the face. Though not built around hummable tunes exactly, their songs still come with a melodic core that gives each one its own flavor.
