The Strokes is an indie rock band that emerged from the New York garage revival wave of the early '00s and after a quick one-two punch success they had with early albums, came to adopt a style more closely aligned with the upbeat sound of '80s new wave bands. They had a little Television in them right from the start, but their 2011 album Angles is when the band fully embraced their inner jangle. They are no stranger to bright dance numbers, but they sound much more comfortable with darker and more subdued tunes, along the lines of Modern English and Psychedelic Furs. They balance the leads pretty well between guitars and synths. There is an easy-going, natural flow to their hooks reminiscent of Spoon. Perhaps not as consistent as long a stretch of time, but the way handle their melodies with a light touch, and their workman-like approach to their art makes the comparison not that far-fetched.
