Sons of Kemet

Sons of Kemet were one of Shabaka Hutchings' numerous projects going on at the same time in the '10s and early '20s. It was a four-piece jazz band that, in addition to Hutchings on saxophone, also included Theon Cross on tuba, and the drummers Tom Skinner and Eddie Hick. Like other jazz bands coming out of South London diurinhg that period, the band's focus was mainly on the Afrobeat style and a mixture of various Caribbean genres, including dubstep. The two drummers explored the ins and outs of African polyrhythms playing against Cross' funky tuba.  They were typically up-tempo, at times approaching a frenetic pace, but always locked into the groove.
