Sons of Kemet is one of Shabaka Hutchings' numerous ongoing projects. It is a four-piece jazz band that, in addition to Hutchings on saxophone, also includes Theon Cross on tuba, and the drummers Tom Skinner and Eddie Hick. Like other jazz bands that have been coming out of South London in recent years, the band's focus is mainly on the Afrobeat style and a mixture of various Caribbean genres, including dubstep. The two drummers explore ins and outs of African polyrhythms playing against Cross' funky tuba. They are typically up-tempo, at times approaching a frenetic pace, but always locked into the groove.
