The Trials of Cato are a band that came into being in Beirut, Lebanon where the members of the trio were working as English teachers, and as the story goes, the titular Cato was some fellow who did not particularly enjoy their music. They play a combination of English and Welsh folk in the traditional ways that, in some sense, follows in the path laid by bands like Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span a couple of generations ago in the '70s. Their songs are split between instrumentals that are driven by the three string instruments, or vocal pieces with the voices provided by all three members, frequently harmonizing. This is old school, traditional folk, updated somewhat to our times without being turned into pop songs.
