Wellington based band Soft Plastics (as opposed to the Vancouver based one) plays indie rock that brings a variety of styles together, including garage, surf rock, shoegaze, and dream pop. They take each of these influences in relatively small bits and lighter doses so none of them really jumps out and takes over. That said, they do kind of crank up the garage or the shoegaze parts every now and then for sure, without making a habit of it. The result is a well-rounded sound that feels lived in. The band plays with a great sense of pacing and hook placement that give their songs a well-earned sense of weight. There is a slightly wistful tone to their music though they also project quite a bit of warmth.
