Seun Kuti is the youngest son of legendary progenitor of Afrobeat, Fela Kuti. Seun began playing saxophone and percussion in his father's band, Egypt 80, at a very young age and, when Fela died in 1997, Seun and the band decided to continue with Seun fronting at the tender age of 14. In 2008, after Seun had completed his formal education and was able to fully devote his time to music, the band released their first album with Seun at the helm and has continued with regular releases. For the most part, the music is in the same vein as Fela's: a blend of traditional West African sounds with Jazz, Funk and Soul with prominent percussion and horns accompanying overtly anti-imperialist, pro-black lyrics. And it's all done very well with Seun injecting some of his own personality into the project with some expansion into other African musical traditions and perhaps a higher average bpm. The band, as always, is loaded with fantastic musicians who must be an absolute blast to see perform live.
