Papercuts is the moniker used by singer-songwriter and guitarist Jason Quever who creates music that is deeply anchored in the '60s British invasion sound with a healthy serving of Velvet Undergound. There are elements of the early Rolling Stones, Who, and Pink Floyd in his music, especially emphasizing hazy vocals mixed in with slinky instrumentals and old school production style one finds in the '60s recordings. Think cello riffs and harpsichord arpeggios in the background ... it is that vintage sound. It is perhaps worth noting that all those semi-psychedelic tones comes across as almost proto-shoegaze in the contemporary context when combined with his reverb-ridden recording technique. There is no doubt that Quever is a terrific songwriter. He brings a lot of hooks and melodic know-how to the proceedings. His earlier recordings (2014 and back) have a more pronounced dream pop component that has subsided a bit in more recent recordings.
