Nate Smith

Nate Smith is a jazz drummer recognized as a master of his instrument, who has worked as a session musician with major artists, including Dave Holland and Norah Jones. His own work typically focuses on his band Kinfolk, where he taps into a relaxed pop-jazz base that absorbs hip-hop breaks and some rapping, R&B melodies, and rock tones as well. His music does not have a lot of jagged edges or aggressive attacks, and embraces features that would garner a broad appeal. As a drummer, he is especially known for working in a stripped down space between his snare, hi-hat, and bass drum, establishing a deep pocket within that space, and keeping his rhythmic flourishes within the groove. His 2018 album Pocket Change is a recording of his solo drum work, which is a treasure trove for drummers and drum enthusiasts.
