Butcher Brown is a five piece ensemble based in Richmond, Virginia, that plays hybrid forms of jazz, blending it with a variety of genres, most prominently hip-hop, bossa nova, funk, and neo-soul. Their music tends to be eclectic for the most part with some laid-back qualities. They started out with a relatively conventional mixture of '80s style fusion and pop jazz on All Purpose Music in 2014, which evolved over time into a more overtly hip-hop oriented style as the band incorporated a more contemporary take on fusion. Their sound also has a strong funk component as well, occasionally leaning in the direction of bands like The Roots. Their 2018 album Afrokuti: A Tribute to Fela, which is dedicated to the work of the great Fela Kuti, offers another angle on their work.
