Nadine Shah

Nadine Shah is a London-based singer and songwriter who seems to have picked up the torch from an early period PJ Harvey in terms of attitude, overall tone, and depth of her work. She sings in a similar rich alto range as Siouxsie Sioux, and her music has similar dark undertones.  Other than that, Shah is pretty much her own thing, stylistically. She builds on a sturdy rock beat with hooks that are not overtly catchy but sink in deep. Her delivery is restrained in the sense of bottled up anger. She does not normally do cheery, uplifting, hopeful songs. She broods a lot. But then she also has a lot on her mind with songs dealing with heavy societal and political issues including, among many other things, the refugee crises that engulfed the world in the late '10s.
