Mother Falcon
Outline
Mother Falcon is an orchestral band from Austin that produces indie pop type music delivered with a lot of classical orchestra instrumentation and mindset. The band was originally conceived by cello player Nick Gregg, and quickly grew into a musical collective with up to 20 members at one point. The songwriting is collective, and the members often play multiple instruments. Despite the classical tones that dominate the overall sound, the music actually comes across as dynamic, enthusiastic, and timeless, owing to their ability to use elements of classical music and not get boxed in by modern instruments and sounds. The closest comparisons would have to be with San Francisco's The Family Crest, another band with similar orchestral leanings. The texture of the songs are within the range of Beirut (minus the Balkan affectation) and Typhoon (minus the staccato and the angst). The band is relatively inactive these days, but they have been making appearances at SXSW every now and then.
