Typhoon is a band from Portland, Oregon with a broad, orchestral sound, driven by singer/guitarist/songwriter Kyle Morton. The band's size changes from album to album, sometimes reaching up to 14 members, including multiple horns, string instruments, guitars, two drummers and so on. Whereas bands with similar size and composition such as Mother Falcon and the early Beirut opt for a broad, expansive sound, Typhoon has a more tightly wrapped, punchy style in which a gentle acoustic passage can be bracketed by big sonic bursts. Morton works on a big canvas with big emotions and a strong undercurrent of angst. He is an emotive singer, but with a more staccato delivery and an audible tension in his voice, as opposed to the more elegiac tones of someone like Zach Condon (of Beirut) or other bands that work in this type of music.
