Moon Hooch is a one of a kind band, not only in its make up of two saxophones and drums, but also in the special brand of jazz-infused, stomping, thumping dance music they play. They started out busking at subway stations in NYC and the legend has it that they were eventually banned because of the spontaneous dance parties that erupted whenever they were playing. Their music does have that intoxicating energy. At its core is the two saxophones (a baritone or bass, with the horn of the sax often extended with a cut-up traffic cone) riffing, grooving, and soloing, backed up by frantically aggressive drums providing the backbeat. The songs are mostly instrumental. It is hard to categorize their music but a general agreement is that it is at least jazz-adjacent. The band has been adding electronic grooves and soundscapes in recent years. Their 2023 album My Head & My Heart is uncharacteristically focused on ballads exclusively.
