of Montreal is a band based in Athens, Georgia (not Montreal, Quebec as one may assume), that is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter extraordinaire Kevin Barnes, who has been putting out albums with remarkable regularity since 1997. Their music is a combination of psychedelic rock, glam, disco, and old-fashioned vaudeville act with all the flamboyance that goes with it. Barnes is the absolute focal point of the band, their main creative engine and solo performer in some of their records. The overall tone of their music does not change too much, but there are always significant tweaks between different influences competing for the same space, whether it is David Bowie, psychedelic John Lennon, or Prince. The band's catalog plays like endless variations and adjustments on a fundamentally consistent approach that emphasizes a bold and catchy sound and leans strongly towards theatrical flair and danceable grooves.
