Matt Ulery

Matt Ulery is a Chicago based bassist, composer, and bandleader with an adventurous streak who continues to move around stylistically. He is a prolific artist with a remarkable output, often changing things up between his releases, while still operating in a traditional acoustic jazz set-up. A lot of his work taps into his classical music sensibilities with his use of string based chamber ensembles. He also has a way of bringing other elements to his music, including prog rock, post-rock, fusion, folk, and so on. That level of versatility, along with his and his bandmates' deftness in making these shifts back and forth, underscores his ability to surprise audiences. He took another turn on his 2025 album Mother Harp, going in an electric direction and incorporating a more overt rock feel to his overall sound.
