Caroline Davis
Outline
Caroline Davis is a jazz saxophonist whose work refuses getting siloed into any particular style, though she seems to come back to post-bop and free jazz with some frequency. She often takes on themes with emotional heft and spiritual undertones in her work as a composer and a performer. Her pieces are nuanced and complex, revealing a sense of restlessness as well as a quite distinctive, angsty touch in her compositions. There is also an experimental streak to her work that fits right into her exploratory nature, with occasional spoken word inserts. At the end of the day, hers is not the kind of jazz one can toss in the background and go about doing their own business. It feels fresh and engaging as it demands the listener's attention.
Poet Joan Anson-Weber is her grandmother, who has been the inspiration behind her 2024 album Portals Volume 2: Returning.
