The Heavy is a funk and soul infused indie rock band originally from Bath, England, that adopts a lot of garage elements much the same way The Dirtbombs did at an earlier time. Singer Kelvin Swaby has the explosive swagger of James Brown and the type of gravelly voice that fits right in with their bluesy overtones. The songs are often uptempo and punchy, and backed by a full horn section that gives their music even more weight. The band channels a lot of the '70s funky rock spirit that captures a lot of the vintage feel but also pays their respect the rough and grease and dirt laden side of garage rock. In that sense, even though they go for, and actually achieve, that familiar retro sound, their music does not really feel dated or old-fashioned.
