Little Scream is Laurel Sprengelmeyer, a singer-songwriter and a multi-instrumentalist with roots that go into indie folk, although she has been moving in an indie rock direction recently. As a native Iowan, she took her chance to chronicle the state of the middle America in her 2019 album, Speed Queen, which is filled with social commentary on class in the US. Her songs tend to be not overly melodic but they are put together with a strong sense of balance. Her vocal delivery is generally relaxed and her arrangements are relatively straightforward. By contrast, her earlier albums had more intricate, prog-like constructions and instrumentation choices that gave her folk a more expansive, grander orchestral feel, which was especially a prominent feature of her first album The Golden Record (2011).
